My STEAM experience

I am Gwenn Zaberer an elementary art teacher in Arlington Public Schools in Virginia for almost 18 years. This blog shares my experience with STEAM and examples of STEAM projects centered around art.  STEAM is an integrated approach to learning that combines ideas in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. A true STEAM experience usually combines at least two of the STEAM elements. Art is important to STEAM for innovation, design,  and creativity.

I currently teach three enrichment classes in STEAM to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. I am in the process of designing a STEAM curriculum with my students. They have been taking risks along with me to find out what works and what does not. We have been exploring low tech and high tech STEAM projects. Also have been experimenting with programming in Scratch with the Makey Makey and using conductive paint and other conductive elements to create interactive art.  Making performance art by creating art that flies in a wind tunnel. Creating art that lights up using a simple circuit. Students are encouraged to collaborate and combined resources with every project or they can choose to work alone. I have been seeing more students work together with each project.

Explore my page for lesson ideas.  I have  always used technology as another tool to create art. My students and I are experiencing this new technology together. Visit my school art gallery website Long Branch Elementary
